Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
