Users Stopping Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing such drugs need to be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle support.
