The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in federal court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the Civil Rights Division.
Broader Implications
The legal battle represents the most significant response by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and possible further challenges.
