They're Doing in America What They Did with Christianity

The Trump movement's most revealing and distinctive occasions – not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of a few weeks, the American president began displaying all observers his plans for an ornate dance hall twice the size of the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to build it.

He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of fatalities from his cuts to foreign assistance is 600,000 and rising, and presently research projected his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No former leader would have dared – truly, no previous leader would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the presidential residence in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple the richest Americans, the majority of whom have business with public institutions.

We went from 'the meek shall inherit the planet' toward 'the meek shall die of cholera'

As bewildering as it is to observe the chief executive try to upend the old idea regarding democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who wouldn't consider it completely novel. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have observed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we were raised with into the total contrary of our understanding of him. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of compassion into a symbol of animosity who approves precisely the cruelties that he denounced in the Gospel; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, over decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.

A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold

Hence I shall explain the Jesus from my childhood, as conceptually Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and because the rapidly expanding group among Americans may possess limited understanding of him because they identify as skeptics or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that there are pearls of substantial value in the Christian story.

It is decidedly absolutely not the account of a powerful ruler emerging; instead, a baby is born to homeless parents in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to escape covert authorities. The child matures in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his teaching is about love for others, particularly for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, expressed by feeding and sheltering. Christ's response to aggression is to offer the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a means to instruct the assailant; his crime policy indicates that whenever someone steals your coat you ought to provide them your pullover too.

The evident and clear truth that the Savior in biblical accounts requests a kind of profound affection focused on the needy is what has always made Christian religion something of a provocative belief system: attractive to the general public, but owing to its intrinsic extremism requiring to be controlled. In the fifties it was restrained via weakening – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it practically baptized the status quo.

A Battle for the Finest Within Us

Therefore I have felt inspired to witness the determined opposition regarding Trump develop in this past year. It has been great solace to help build the campaign that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated electorate to turn out in numbers in the off-year elections. We will need to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags at every demonstration and appeals to the finest aspects within national heritage.

We shall be interrogated ... about how you treated the foreigner? Did you accept these individuals and receive them or reject?

America is best defended, in other words, by reference to the finest in US heritage, just as Christianity is optimally secured by reference to elements that cause it to be unique and wonderful, which is the example of Christ. In neither case does it mean acting as if the worst regarding America and Christian faith was nonexistent; it means both humility and faith, a blend that serious national faithful should embrace.
