British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several entry passages providing entry to the facility... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of British forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," he commented. "They were part of thousands of UK service members stationed over the festive period. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, following an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
