European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
