Educating an Infant to Become an 'British Gentleman' – Does It Justify the Money?

Child education concept
The company responsible for the advertisement explains that what seems like "luxury or oddity" is truly "purposeful investment in early-stage education".

"A family based in the northern part of London wants to find an extraordinary and skilled educator to guide their smallest child on his first steps to growing into an English gentleman."

Upon seeing this listing, you might naturally skip the phrase "initial stages" as simple figurative language.

Yet, it might be the most important part of this unique position posting, as it aims to find a teacher for a infant.

Many of responses have now been submitted since the unidentified family posted their request for the highly paid tutor, who needs to be "a uniquely qualified person".

In recent few weeks, the listing has attracted notice in the media, with numerous wondering why?

Innovative Idea

Adam Caller, chief executive of a global tutoring firm, which is helping the family in their search, stated that despite first scepticism, he viewed the idea "visionary", and "innovative".

When he consulted the family, he mentioned they recognized the unusual nature of their demand, and how young their son is.

Nevertheless, they clarified that they "didn't want to wait any longer" to engage a tutor, as they had waited until their elder sibling was five, and by that stage "cultural conditioning had by then become established".

What exactly does the family refer to by "cultural leaning"?

It's "all-encompassing", he replied. "How you eat, the way you speak".

He stated the firstborn had absorbed "very nuanced, unspoken signals" from the family, and had taken on their cultural habits. The family informed him they hoped to prevent the same situation to repeat itself with their new baby.

The strategy: To engage a British tutor, who needs to speak with RP, to influence the baby from day one.

Tutoring discussion
The education firm claim the listing has initiated a larger discussion about how families view education, advantage and the part of family background in education.

Osmotic Learning

"A great deal of the development at the start here is rather acquired indirectly," explained the expert.

It's through this osmosis that the family are aiming the child will adopt the UK customs they aim to instil.

The consultant noted the tutor had to be someone who went to "prestigious academies – the same kinds of schools as the family hope to send their son to".

"The tutor just has to be the suitable individual, they'll be performing things they aren't even aware they're doing, simply by nature," he added.

Money No Object

The family informed him the chosen tutor should ideally also have familiarity of or passion in equestrian activities, alpine skiing, creative fields and music so as to shape the child in a broad spectrum of interests.

Furthermore though, he stated the family desired the tutor to register the child on a selection of classes so the child would be "equestrian training and learning an instrument by the time they are about three years old".

In the family's perspective, helping their son become a "British gentleman" will lead to success and open doors.

"Considering the rights and wrongs of that, because it's undoubtedly a class statement," he notes.

But, notwithstanding all this tutelage in "English culture", might the child pick up alleged cultural influence from the globally influenced family he resides with in any case?

"Yes", replied he. "The parents know this may not work, but they've just taken the attitude of, 'let's give it a go and we should start as quickly as we can', because the expense of it is not relevant," he said.

Overly Optimistic

A number of in the education sector who have similar doubts.

An education leader, head and founder of a tutoring service, who provides personal educators, stated that "the process of embracing two identities, or in fact, forming one's identity, is something that must be grown into, not designed."

He explained that he had relocated from Asia to the United Kingdom at the age of childhood, and had been brought up understanding and embodying two backgrounds. He progressed to be educated at a prestigious UK institution.

Peter Cui was the first individual originating from the People's Republic of China to be elected to the position of Financial Officer of the university debating society.

"The idea that an individual can function as a embodiment of UK identity, someone who can somehow transplant the attributes of a UK sophisticate onto a one-year-old child, appears naive and unfeasible," he stated.

"Based on my background, engaging a quintessentially British tutor from infancy will not instantly produce the goal they want.

"I wasn't provided with such a tutor, and however I have been privileged enough to experience many of the opportunities they desire for their son."

He stated: "The fact is, self-identity cannot be forced from the outside; it must be embraced, and it must come from within."

Acquiring Englishness

Naturally, English culture is something Adam believes can be educated – and marketed.

"I think the fact that the world regards us in this respect is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
